Srinagar, January 1, 2025: Jammu and Kashmir is set to experience a mix of rain and snow in the coming days due to two approaching Western Disturbances, according to the Meteorological Department with authorities advising caution for travelers, transporters, and tourists as road conditions may worsen.
Light snowfall is expected at scattered locations across the region starting tonight, continuing into the first half of January 2. On January 3, light snow may continue over isolated higher reaches, accompanied by cloudy skies.
The most major weather activity is anticipated between January 4 and 6, driven by a moderate to strong Western Disturbance. “Widespread light to moderate rain in the plains and snow in most parts of J&K is expected, peaking from the night of January 4 to late January 5,” said a MET Centre Srinagar official.
An improvement in weather conditions is expected by the afternoon of January 6, he said.
Heavy snowfall may occur in isolated higher-altitude areas during this period. Between January 7 and 10, cloudy skies are predicted, but dry weather is likely to prevail, he added.
In an advisory, officials cautioned about sub-freezing temperatures, icy road conditions, and the possibility of travel disruptions in both plains and mountainous regions.
Residents and visitors are urged to monitor administrative updates and traffic advisories to ensure safe travel, reads the advisory.
