Rajouri, 15 January 2025 –With unexplained deaths in Pir Panchal’s Rajouri rising to 14, experts consulted by the J&K administration suggest the presence of neurotoxins in samples from the deceased.

According to a government spokesperson, microbiological studies have ruled out viral, bacterial, or microbial infections as possible causes. Instead, experts have noted that the deaths appear localized and may share an epidemiological link.

Investigators identified neurotoxins in samples, and further tests are underway to confirm their role, he said.

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo chaired a high-level meeting on Wednesday with divisional and district officials alongside health experts from national institutions reviewing the situation.

He stressed the need for coordinated efforts between the health and police departments.

"The reports from various reputed institutions should soon provide clarity on the cause of these deaths," Dulloo stated.

Since December 7, 2024, 14 deaths out of 38 affected persons have been reported in three separate incidents in the Badhal village.

“Rapid Response Teams have been deployed, while samples from humans, animals, and water sources are being analyzed in collaboration with national health institutions.”

The Chief Secretary instructed the police to use scientific resources to push the investigation forward and directed the health department to leverage analytical reports to develop leads.

"We are determined to identify the root cause and prevent further loss of life in the region," he added.

Neurotoxins are toxic substances that disrupt the normal functioning of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. They interfere with the transmission of signals between neurons by damaging nerve cells or altering their behavior, leading to various neurological symptoms and conditions.
