Ramban, Apr 13 — A protest broke out in the Makarkoot area of Ramban district on Monday after a youth went missing, with locals blocking the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway for nearly four hours, officials said.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ramban reached the spot following the blockade, even as details surrounding the disappearance remained unclear.
According to local news agency KDC, the protest was triggered by the disappearance of Tanveer Ahmed Chopan on Sunday afternoon. Reports suggest he may have jumped into Nallah Bishlari while allegedly trying to escape from suspected miscreants (cow vigilantes) chasing him in two vehicles, though officials have not independently confirmed this account.
“The protest erupted following the disappearance… while trying to escape from suspected miscreants,” KDC reported, citing preliminary inputs.
Police have detained four persons in connection with the incident, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the case, the report said.
Officials said efforts are underway to ascertain the sequence of events, while urging restraint as the investigation progresses.
