Panel Formed To Probe Rainawari Land Sinking

Srinagar: As six houses in Srinagar city’s Rainawari developed cracks, the LG administrationhas has set up an expert committee to investigate the land subsidence in the area, officials said.

According to reports, at least six houses in Khwajapura Surteng, located in Rainawari of the old city, started showing cracks and some buildings began to tilt on June 17.

In an order, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, who is also the Chairman District Disaster Management Authority, said that the nine member Committee headed by the Additional Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Syed Ahmad Kataria has been constituted to ascertain the facts that lead to sinking of several houses in Khawajapora Syedpora in Rainawari locality of the city.

Srinagar's Additional Deputy Commissioner, Syed Ahmad Kataria, said: “Some eight families living in these houses have either shifted to other places or are staying with neighbors after the houses developed cracks. A committee of experts and administration officials has also been formed to examine the cause of the land sinking.”

He added: “The committee comprises experts from the University of Kashmir and the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar, as well as those from the departments of geology and mining, roads and buildings, and the district administration.”

The committee will visit the site on Wednesday morning to probe and draft a report on the matter, Kataria said.

The constituted Expert Committee comprises members including Prof. Ghulam Jeelani, Professor of Earth Science at the University of Kashmir; Ghulam Hassan, Joint Commissioner (Planning) of SMC; Shabir Ahmad, Executive Engineer at Core Division, R&B, Srinagar; Dr. Shakeel Waseem, Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering at NIT, Srinagar; Syed Shahid Hussain, Tehsildar of Khanyar, Srinagar; Imtiyaz Ahmad Mir, SDPO of Khanyar, Srinagar; Mir Jehangir, Executive Engineer at Building & Design-II, Quality Control, R&B Department, Srinagar; Zahoor Ahmad, Executive Engineer of Smart City, Srinagar; and Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, Geologist-III at the Geology & Mining Department, Srinagar.
