Jammu, Apr 1 — The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday ruled out a ban on imported frozen and chilled food items, stating that stricter enforcement of existing food safety laws will be prioritised to curb violations.

Health Minister Sakina Itoo told the Legislative Assembly that the government is focusing on implementation rather than imposing a blanket ban.

“There is no need to impose a ban… the focus is on strict enforcement of food safety regulations,” she said.

Responding to a proposal raised by MLA Pirzada Farooq Ahmad Shah, the minister said 3,700 inspections have been conducted, with 1,346 samples collected for testing. Of these, 1,292 reports have been processed and 601 cases registered under relevant laws.

She said authorities have seized 22,026 units of food items and imposed fines amounting to Rs 30.8 lakh.

“Strict action will be taken against violators,” Itoo said, adding that the government is working to curb illegal practices and ensure safe and hygienic food for consumers.

The minister said the task force wing will be strengthened to improve enforcement and compliance on the ground, while also acknowledging that awareness around food safety had been limited in the past.

She assured the House that suggestions made in the private member’s bill seeking a complete ban would be examined to improve the effectiveness of existing laws. The bill was withdrawn following the government’s response.
