Ladakh Demands; Deadlock Spurs Wangchuk's Fast

Leh: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recently addressed certain demands from Ladakh, including the establishment of a Public Services Commission (PSC) and partial implementation of the Sixth Schedule through elected Hill Development Councils. However, a deadlock emerged during a Sub-Committee meeting and talks with Home Minister Amit Shah, as the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) insisted on full implementation of the Sixth Schedule and statehood.

Sonam Wangchuk, engineer, innovator, and education reformist has announced a fast in protest, with a rally planned in Leh.

LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjey Lakruk underlined progress on the PSC establishment but noted disagreement over the Sixth Schedule’s method of implementation.

The Home Ministry emphasized continuous dialogue for Ladakh’s constitutional safeguards.

Following the breakdown of talks, various religious organizations in Leh called for a bandh (shutdown) the next day, supported by several groups.

Despite over two years of discussions, LAB and KDA leaders have yet to see progress on their four-point agenda: Statehood, Sixth Schedule, PSC, and parliamentary seats for Ladakh.

They plan to consult with the public on their next steps upon returning to Ladakh.

While some progress has been made on Ladakh’s demands, disagreements remain over crucial issues such as the Sixth Schedule and statehood.

The failure of recent talks has prompted protests and calls for further action from local leaders and organizations.
