Srinagar, March 1 — Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday appealed for calm after mourning demonstrations were held in parts of Kashmir following reports of the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Chief Minister expressed deep concern over the developments in Iran and urged people to maintain peace.
“The Chief Minister has expressed deep concern over the unfolding developments in Iran, including reports of the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He has appealed to all communities to remain calm, uphold peace, and avoid any actions that could lead to tension or unrest,” the Office of the Chief Minister said in a post on X.
The government, it said, is coordinating with the Union Ministry of External Affairs to ensure the safety of residents of Jammu and Kashmir currently in Iran.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a high-level security review meeting in Jammu to assess the prevailing situation amid Valley-wide mourning demonstrations.
In a post on X, Sinha called upon all communities to maintain peace and harmony and commended the police and security forces for their coordinated efforts in maintaining law and order.
“I salute the unwavering and synchronized resolve of the police and security forces in ensuring stability across J&K,” he said.
Mourning gatherings were reported from several parts of Kashmir following reports that Khamenei was killed in a joint US-Israeli attack, with forces deployed in sensitive areas as a precautionary measure.
Officials said the administration is closely monitoring the situation to ensure that peace is maintained.
