Chandigarh, August 25: Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for raping two of his female disciples, walked out of Haryana’s Sunariya jail on Tuesday after being granted a 21-day furlough.
Ram Rahim left the district jail in Sunariya village at around 6:05 am in an SUV amid tight security arrangements and is scheduled to stay at his Dera in Sirsa during the furlough period.
This is the third time this year that Ram Rahim has been released from prison and his 17th parole or furlough release since his conviction in 2017.

Earlier this year, he was granted a 40-day release in January and another 30-day parole in May.
Ram Rahim was convicted in August 2017 by a special CBI court in Panchkula for raping two of his female disciples. He was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Ram Rahim has also been involved in several other legal proceedings over the years. Courts have dealt with matters concerning his temporary release as well as separate cases involving allegations of defamation and hurting religious sentiments. In July 2024, the Punjab and Haryana High Court sought the Haryana government’s response to his plea seeking a 21-day furlough, while the Delhi High Court has also dealt with proceedings concerning online content about the Dera chief.
