Woman Killed, Dozens Injured in Cross-LoC Shelling in North Kashmir

Srinagar, May 9 โ€” A woman was killed and at least a dozen civilians injured after intense shelling from across the Line of Control (LoC) struck north Kashmirโ€™s Baramulla and Kupwara districts late Thursday night, officials said Friday.

The woman, a resident of Uri, sustained critical injuries during the overnight shelling and was later declared dead at a hospital in Baramulla.ย

โ€œShe was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries,โ€ a senior official confirmed.ย

Heavy artillery exchange erupted between Indian and Pakistani forces along the LoC late Thursday and continued into early Friday morning.ย

The shelling caused extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, with officials reporting over 50 houses and several government buildings damaged in the affected areas. officials added.ย

A senior administration official in north Kashmir said, โ€œThe shelling was intense and targeted several villages close to the LoC. Many families had to evacuate their homes in the middle of the night.โ€

The Indian military responded to the Pakistani shelling with what it described as a โ€œstrong and effectiveโ€ retaliation.ย

โ€œOur forces responded in equal measure to the unprovoked firing,โ€ said a spokesperson.
