Srinagar: Founder and chairman of the Ittihadul Musilmeen, Mohammad Abbas Ansari passed away today morning after a prolonged illness at his residence in the Khankhai Subah Nawakadal area of Srinagar.
His Family said that Abbas Ansari was not keeping well for a long and his health deteriorated over the last couple of days
They said that today morning he breathed his last at his residence in the Nawakadal area.
They said that his funeral will be held after Zuhr’s prayers and he will be laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Babamazaar Zadibal.
Notably, Ansari was admitted to SKIMS Soura recently as he was not keeping well for a long.
National Conference president and MP Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Apni Party president, Mohammad Altaf Bukhari also visited him to enquire about his health.
Popularly known as Molvi Abbas, he was the last surviving politician of the Plebiscite Front era.
Alumni of the famous Najaf seminary Maulana Abbas founded Anjuman-e- Ittehadul Muslimeen after his return from a decade-long stay in Iraq in 1962. Molvi Abbas spent years behind bars for his relentless struggle for the rights of the Kashmiri people.
In 1987 Abbas became the founding convenor of the Muslim United Front ( MUF) which changed the political landscape of Kashmir.
After his release from prison,co-found ended the All Parties Hurriyat Conference. He led several rounds of talks with New Delhi during the Atal Behari Vajpayee era as he was a strong proponent of a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute. However, his differences with Pakistan’s approach later led to his ouster from the multiparty combine.
Abbas virtually retired from active political life and was mostly engrossed in spiritual pursuits.
Molvi Abbas has penned scores of books on the spiritual aspects of Islam.
His autobiography penned during his jail stay titled “ Khare Gulistan” meaning thorn of the garden was released in 2018.
