SRINAGAR, Aug 19: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor is visiting Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, marking his first trip to the Union Territory since taking charge earlier this year, official sources said.
Gor is scheduled to meet Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during his stay in Srinagar. He is also expected to meet other political figures during the visit.
The US envoy is scheduled to stay overnight in Srinagar before travelling to Ladakh as part of his regional visit, sources said.
Gor, who also serves as the US Special Envoy for South Asia and Central Asia, is expected to discuss issues relating to India-US bilateral ties, including defence, trade and broader strategic cooperation.
The visit comes against the backdrop of continuing political discussions in Jammu and Kashmir over the restoration of statehood and the region’s post-2019 political framework.
Security arrangements have also been stepped up in Srinagar ahead of the high-level diplomatic visit.
Gor’s visit marks a significant US diplomatic engagement with Jammu and Kashmir following the 2019 changes that led to the erstwhile state’s reorganisation into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
