Kupwara, Sept 14: A 38-year-old tourist from West Bengal has gone missing from the Teetwal area near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, triggering a search operation after his Aadhaar card was allegedly found to be fake, officials said on Sunday.
The missing tourist has been identified as Sanjay Sardar, a resident of Kolkata. Officials said Sardar had left behind his Aadhaar card and other personal belongings at a guest house in Teetwal before he went missing on Saturday.
“His Aadhaar card was found to be fake,” officials said, adding that authorities were also working to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
According to officials, Sardar had arrived alone in Tangdhar and obtained permission from Kralpora police station to visit Teetwal, a strategically sensitive area close to the LoC.
After local authorities received a missing report, a search operation was launched to trace him. Officials said his mobile phone was subsequently tracked to Chenani in Udhampur district, along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
“Using cellphone tracking technology, we found his phone active in the Chenani area of Udhampur,” officials said.
Authorities are continuing efforts to locate Sardar and ascertain how he travelled from the Kupwara sector to the Udhampur area.
