Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir police on Tuesday busted third sex racket in north Kashmir’s Handwara in which five persons including a house owner and his wife were arrested.
In a statement, a spokesperson said that an information was received from reliable sources about the immoral activities operating from the house of an individual in Reshipora area.
The statement reads accordingly, a search party conducted a raid in the house of Shabir Ahmad War, S/o Ghulam Ahmad War of Reshipora, where a sex racket was busted.
It reads five persons were arrested from the spot, including the house owner and his wife, one sex worker and two customers. "Cash amounting to Rs 47,800 was also recovered from the spot."
Those who have been arrested were identified as Rayees Ah Lone, s/o Khazir Mohd Lone of Dangerpora, Rafiabad, Bilal Ahmad Sheikh, s/o Abdul Rehman Sheikh of Binner, Baramulla, a female sex worker (name withheld), Shabir Ahmad War (house owner) s/o Gh Ahmad War of Rishipora and wife of the house owner (name withheld).
It added a case FIR No. 37/2023 under relevant sections of law has been registered at PS Kralgund and investigation has been initiated.
Earlier, Srinagar Police busted two more prostitution rackets in Nowgam and Chanapora area. Also one in Jammu.
Last year, the Supreme Court of India recognised Prostituition as a profession and told the police that they should neither interfere nor take criminal action against consenting sex workers.
It said prostitution is a profession and sex workers are entitled to dignity and equal protection under the law.
However, according to the Indian Penal Code, prostitution in its broader sense is not really illegal per se but there are certain activities which constitute a major part of prostitution are punishable under certain provisions of the act: Soliciting services of prostitution at public places Carrying out prostitution activities in hotels Being the owner of a brothel Pimping Indulge in prostitution by arranging a sex worker Arrangement of a sexual act with a customer.
