Leh: The Ladakh administration, led by Retd. Brig BD Mishra, issued a directive on Tuesday instructing the regional administrative department not to allow any new liquor vends in the region, in response to appeals from religious bodies.
Some days ago, a delegation from the Ladakh Buddhist Association, led by its Chief Tsering Norboo, met with the LG at the secretariat, urging the administration to refrain from permitting new liquor shops and bars in the region, as per officials.
Subsequently, the LG, Retd. Brig BD Mishra, accepted the appeal and directed Commissioner Secretary of Ladakh, Kacho Mehboob Ali Khan, to halt the allocation of new liquor shops in Ladakh, the official said.
Furthermore, in alignment with Ladakh’s administrative policy, licenses for operating Type A liquor shops are exclusively granted to residents of the region.
Notably, in the administrative policy for the year 2023-24, there has been a transition in the regulation of alcoholic beverages, with the regional administration allowing micro-breweries and facilitating a shift from high to low-alcohol content.
