Srinagar, Jan 4— Kashmir continued to reel under intense winter cold during the ongoing Chillai Kalan despite the absence of sustained snowfall, with several parts of the Valley recording sub-zero night temperatures, according to data compiled by Kashmir Weather, Srinagar.
The ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a low of –6.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Shopian at –6.0 degrees and Pulwama at –5.1 degrees. Anantnag registered a minimum temperature of –4.6 degrees, while Srinagar city recorded –3.2 degrees Celsius. The Srinagar airport and Awantipora in south Kashmir both logged lower minimums of –4.2 degrees.
Qazigund and Pahalgam recorded minimum temperatures of –4.0 degrees each, while Budgam and Baramulla settled at –3.3 degrees. Pampore recorded –3.0 degrees, Kupwara –2.5 degrees, Ganderbal –2.0 degrees and Bandipora –1.2 degrees Celsius.
Night temperatures across the Jammu region remained significantly higher. Jammu city recorded a minimum of 10.0 degrees Celsius, while the airport reported 10.3 degrees. Kathua and Katra registered lows of 7.0 degrees each.
However, parts of the Chenab Valley experienced colder conditions, with Bhaderwah recording –1.6 degrees and Banihal –0.9 degrees Celsius. Batote and Doda logged minimum temperatures of 1.9 degrees each, while Ramban recorded 2.3 degrees, Rajouri 2.5 degrees, Kishtwar 2.9 degrees, Udhampur 5.2 degrees and Reasi 8.8 degrees.
In the Ladakh region, Leh continued to reel under severe cold conditions, with the minimum temperature plunging to –11.0 degrees Celsius.
Officials said weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir have remained largely dry during the ongoing 40-day harsh winter period of Chillai Kalan, which began on December 21. A weak western disturbance affected parts of north Kashmir a few days ago, bringing light rain and snowfall, but no major weather system is currently active.
