Srinagar, Sep 24: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre to exempt teachers appointed before October 31, 2019, from appearing in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET).
Education Minister Sakina Itoo moved the resolution, which calls for an amendment to Section 23 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, to provide the exemption.
The resolution states that the House “unanimously urges the Union Government to make necessary statutory amendment” to Section 23 of the RTE Act to exempt all teachers appointed before October 31, 2019, from the TET requirement.

The Assembly also urged the Centre to take the necessary legal steps and issue the requisite notification through the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) to formalise the exemption.
The resolution further calls for the proposed amendment and notification to cover all teachers appointed before the specified date.
The move comes amid concerns over the applicability of the TET requirement to teachers appointed before the October 31, 2019 cut-off.
With the resolution, the Assembly has formally urged the Union Government to make the required statutory changes to the RTE framework and provide the exemption.
