Jammu: In the wake of a ceasefire violation that resulted in unprovoked firing along the “International Border” in the Jammu region, India and Pakistan convened a flag meeting on Saturday to address the escalating tensions in the region.
A flag meeting at the wing commander – commandant level was held between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistan Rangers at Border Out Post (BOP) Octroi in the Suchetgharh sector of Jammu. The meeting saw the BSF delegation leader lodging a strong protest with Pakistan Rangers for the unprovoked firing in the Arnia area during the night of October 26 and 27, 2023.
“The meeting concluded on a cordial note, underlining the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along the ‘International border,’” a BSF spokesperson said.
During the discussions, officers from both countries addressed various issues, including incidents of firing, the presence of suspects in border areas, and routine matters related to border management, he said.
The recent ceasefire violation marked an escalation in tensions, as Pakistan Rangers engaged in unprovoked targeted attacks on several BSF posts and civilian areas in the Arnia and Suchetgharh sectors. These attacks included small arms fire and mortar shelling, resulting in injuries to two BSF troopers and a civilian woman. The BSF responded by retaliating to the unprovoked firing by Pakistan Rangers.
The consequences of this violation are far-reaching. Many local residents have been forced to evacuate their homes and migrate to safer areas, even as the paddy crop in the region awaits harvest. Agricultural laborers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh who had come to the region for harvesting have also fled due to the cross-border shelling.
Farmers in the region are deeply concerned, as the paddy crop has already suffered damage from previous rain, and the ceasefire violation resulted in financial losses. Due to the ongoing heavy shelling, movement along the border was restricted for several days.
This incident marks the second ceasefire violation in the Arnia sector this month. Notably, in February 2021, following numerous civilian casualties and extensive damage to property on both sides, the BSF and Pakistani Rangers had agreed to maintain a ceasefire along the border. While relative peace had prevailed since then, recent events have raised concerns and necessitated a renewed focus on diplomatic solutions to ease border tensions.
On October 17, 2023, two BSF personnel were injured in another unprovoked firing incident by Pakistani Rangers in the Arnia sector, leading the BSF to lodge a strong protest with their Pakistani counterparts.
