Srinagar: The upper reaches of Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Thursday while the rains lashed the plains, bringing the mercury further down in the Valley.
The famous skiing destination in north Kashmir’s Gulmarg received around 1 ft snowfall including Sadhna Top, connecting the border town of Tangdhar and other remote areas, Kupwara and Gurez
Most areas in the plains of the valley including Srinagar were lashed by rains.
As per the locals in north Kashmir’s Gurez, the overnight snow draped almost all of the valley areas under white including Dawar, the centrally located Tehsil in Gurez, and far off Tulail as well.
Anees Ahmad, a local said that the snow depth is estimated to be 3-4 inches in Dawar, while the weather remains overcast. He said higher reaches have recorded more snow.
Razdan Pass, which is the gateway to Gurez mountainous valley has also received at least 12inches of snowfall late last night and Tragbal received 6 inches of snow, he said.
Meanwhile, Gurez-Bandipora road has been closed to traffic after moderate snowfall along Razdan Pass, a BRO official responsible for roads said.
However, the weatherman has predicted gradual improvement in the weather towards evening and no major forecast till October end.
The deputy director Meteorological department Srinagar, Mukhtar Ahmad said that as predicted upper reaches of the valley received snowfall while rains lashed the plains, thereby bringing down the mercury.
He said that the famous tourist ski resort Gulmarg recorded the season’s lowest temperature at minus 2 degrees.
