Girl Slips Into Boniyar Canal, Dies

Baramulla: A minor girl was killed on Saturday after she slipped into an irrigation canal in the Boniyar area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

An official identified her as Rukaya Bashir, daughter of Bashir Ahmad Ganaie and a resident of Nowpora, Jagir. 
 
She was a 9 class student, and waiting for the school bus along Lower Jhelum Hydroelectric power Project (LJHP) canal when she slipped and fell into the canal, he said.
 
Soon after the incident, a search operation was launched to retrieve her body. The water supply of the canal was also stopped which helped to fish out her body, he added. 
 
He said the body was handed over to her family after medicolegal formalities were completed.
 
Tehsildar Boniyar, Vikramjeet Singh said fencing would be carried out along the LJHP, especially at accident-prone sites soon.
 
He said he will write to the authorities to enforce an SDRF team for Boniyar so that people may not face any difficulties during such incidents.
 
In 2021, Locals of the area protested and demanded fencing around the seven Kilometer long and 25 feet deep water canal starting from Gantamulla Colony to Boniyar village.
