Srinagar: A surge of consumers inundated fuel stations in Srinagar on Thursday, triggered by unverified rumours of an impending petrol shortage with petrol pumps struggling to manage the overwhelming rush, resulting in the temporary closure of a few stations in the city.
As per reports, the influx of vehicles and people equipped with containers created long queues at various fuel stations since the early hours of the day.
The situation unfolded in the aftermath of nationwide strikes initiated by Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV) in protest of the recently introduced Accident Laws by the Indian Parliament.
While the widespread apprehension among the public about a potential petrol crisis exacerbated the rush to refuel, the Divisional Commissioner Vijay Kumar Bidhuri swiftly addressed the speculations, vehemently denying any shortage of fuel in Kashmir
He reassured the public, stating, "We maintain an ample stock of essentials, including petrol and LPG, sufficient for the next month.
“There is no need for panic. Residents can conveniently refill at the Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited outlets,” he added.
As per the new law, now under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), drivers who cause a serious road accident by negligent driving and run away without informing any official can face imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine of Rs 7 lakh.
