Pulwama: An accused in a narcotics case, identified as Imtiaz Ahmed Pala, son of Gul Mohammed Pala and a resident of Lidermund Bra-Vandana, has died in custody after being detained a day ago. His family claims that he died from torture during interrogation.

According to the J&K Police, the accused developed health complications during his detention at Litter Police Station in south Kashmirโ€™s Pulwama and was declared brought dead upon arrival at the hospital.

However, his family disputes this account, asserting, โ€˜We do not believe the police version. Imtiaz was healthy when he was taken to jail yesterday. We suspect foul play and demand a transparent investigation,โ€™ said one of his cousin brothers to news agency KDC.

Imtiaz, a mechanic by profession, is survived by three children, including two daughters and a minor boy.

PDP President Mehbooba Mufti has also called for an investigation into his death, stating, โ€˜Imtiaz Ahmed, an accused in a narcotics case from Pulwama, has died in police custody while another is battling for his life at Base Hospital in Badami Bagh. Imtiazโ€™s family claims he suffered grievous injuries during interrogation. An impartial probe must be initiated to get to the bottom of the truth.โ€™

Meanwhile, police officials have assured that an unbiased investigation will be conducted.

โ€˜We are committed to uncovering the truth. All necessary actions will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.โ€™ย
