Kharar/Mohali, 21 November 2024: A Tanzanian student at Chandigarh University was allegedly killed by his Zambian batchmate, who later died by suicide in police custody, according to a report by The Tribune.
The victim, identified as Nuru Mari from Tanzania, was reportedly murdered by his 24-year-old classmate, Saviour Chikopela of Zambia. Police arrested Chikopela following the incident and detained him in the Sunny Enclave police post lockup in Kharar, Mohali.
Officials stated that Chikopela was found hanging in the lockup early Wednesday.
“He used a thin nylon rope tied to the lockup bars,” an officer revealed.
Authorities rushed him to the Kharar Civil Hospital at approximately 12:10 a.m., where he was declared dead on arrival.
The gates of the Sunny Enclave police post were closed on Thursday morning.
