Baramulla/Bandipora: Back-to-back avalanches continued to hit the Himalayan region of Kashmir’s northern provinces on Saturday; the Neelum or Kishanganga river was blocked by an avalanche for the second time affecting the water supply in three villages of Tulail in Gurez and another was reported at the top ski-resort in Gulmarg for the second time.
However, there were no reports of any casualties in both of the district.
It is pertinent to mention that the avalanches are hitting the valley at a time when there was no major snowfall reported in the Chillai-Kalan (harshest 40-day winter period) also Kashmir capital, Srinagar city received the season’s first heavy snowfall on the first day of Chilli-Khurd (20-day mild cold period).
As per reports, multiple avalanches have hit the Wizirthal, Gugran, and Neeru villages of the Tulail area in Gurez and affected the water supply, the water flow of river Kishanganga was also blocked.
It was the 11th avalanche in Bandipora’s Gurez district in the last two weeks.
In Gulmarg; four days ago, two tourists from Poland were killed and 19 others (many from Russia) were rescued after an avalanche hit the Afarwat Peak.
An official said that area was already declared a Red Zone. "Medical teams have been kept on standby near the avalanche area," he said.
“We are trying our best to restore the water supply,” he added.
