Srinagar: An army personnel was killed while three others remain missing following an avalanche near Mount Kun in Ladakh, as confirmed by defence sources on Monday.
News agency KNO quoted a defence source saying that the incident occurred on Sunday during routine training activities involving a contingent of over 40 army personnel from the High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) and the Army Adventure Wing of the Army in the vicinity of Mount Kun (Ladakh).
“These training exercises are a customary practice during this season, designed to offer realistic mountaineering training for HAWS participants as part of the "Train the Trainer" program, as explained by a Defence source.
“Unfortunately, the group encountered an unexpected avalanche during their training,” he said.
Four personnel were trapped beneath the snow, leading to an ongoing rescue operation, he said further.
“The mortal remains of one of the trapped personnel have been successfully recovered in a daring search operation. Despite challenging weather conditions and heavy snow accumulation, search and rescue operations persist.”
Mount Kun is part of the Zanskar Range, which is a subrange of the larger Himalayan mountain system. The mountain is bordered by Pakistan-controlled Kashmir to the west, China to the north and east, and Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir to the south.
