Kishtwar: As militancy returned to Pir Panchal and Chenab regions, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have installed high-focus CCTV cameras integrated with AI-powered facial recognition devices at key entry and exit points, as well as other crucial locations in Kishtwar to enhance detection and apprehending militants, overground workers, and criminals.
According to Khalil Poswal, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kishtwar, the AI-driven system can store up to 5000 photographs and identify multiple faces, even if individuals are wearing masks. The technology utilises deep learning to analyse and compare facial features in real-time against a vast database of known individuals.
Poswal said that the system’s ability to accurately match faces provides crucial information for identifying and tracking suspects, including active militants in the region.
The system’s deployment is expected to help law enforcement in the quick identification of individuals with anti-India affiliations.
The AI-powered facial recognition system has been deployed at key entry points, checkpoints, and other sensitive areas in Kishtwar.
Poswal revealed plans to replicate the system at other entry points, such as Margon Top and Sinthan Top, and eventually extend its implementation to districts across Pir Panchal and Chenab regions and Kashmir valley.
The system is not limited to local use; there are plans to integrate it with the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) portal at the national level. Additionally, a mobile app is in development, allowing police officials to receive real-time information about the presence or movement of suspects.
“We already fed photographs and details of militants OGWs, and criminals into the system, enabling it to automatically match faces captured in CCTV footage with the existing database,” he added.
