Shimla School Withdraws Eid Event After Right-Wing Protest

Shimla, March 24 2025— A private school in Himachal Pradesh’s capital on Monday withdrew its decision to hold Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations after facing backlash from the right-wing group Dev Bhoomi Sangarsh Samiti, which threatened to protest outside the institution.

The school had initially asked students from nursery to Class 2 to wear kurta-pajama with a small cap and bring roti rolls with paneer, sevaiyan, and dry fruits for the event scheduled on March 28, the last Friday before Eid.

However, the Samiti termed the directive a violation of the secular principles enshrined in the Constitution and warned of legal action if it was not revoked.

"An attempt is unfortunately being made to promote Islam in Himachal Pradesh," the Samiti alleged, vowing to launch an agitation if the school did not back down. The group’s call was echoed by some religious outfits and individuals on social media, who criticized the event.

In a statement, the school said it decided to cancel the celebration "to maintain peace and secure the environment" following the controversy. "The safety and well-being of our children is our highest priority," the school said.

Defending the event, the school clarified that the celebration was meant to promote cultural diversity. "It was intended purely as a cultural learning experience, with no religious rituals or enforcement. Participation was entirely voluntary, similar to how we celebrate Holi, Diwali, and Christmas," the school stated in a communique to parents.

Students were asked to attend classes in their regular uniform instead.
