Conflicting claims, court cases stall deportation from Pakistan

Chandigarh, Jan 7 — Uncertainty continues over the return of Sarabjit Kaur alias Noor Hussain, an Indian national in Pakistan, amid conflicting official claims and pending court cases that have stalled her deportation.

Pakistani media reports and social media posts over the past two days claimed Sarabjit was being sent back to India via the Wagah border, but she has not crossed over so far. A report in Pakistani daily Dawn said an attempt to deport her on Monday failed because the Wagah–Attari border was closed. “Pakistani authorities failed to deport Indian national Sarabjit Kaur due to the closure of the border,” the report said.

Sarabjit, 48, travelled to Pakistan in November 2025 as part of a Sikh jatha to mark Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth anniversary. During her stay, she converted to Islam on November 5, married Lahore resident Nasir Hussain, and adopted the name Noor Hussain. Her visa expired on November 13, after which Pakistani authorities initiated deportation proceedings. Sources said the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) took her into custody to facilitate her handover to Indian authorities at Wagah.

However, the process became complicated after Sarabjit reportedly expressed reluctance to return, claiming she feared for her safety in India.

Amid the confusion, Pakistan’s Punjab Minority Affairs Minister Ramesh Singh Arora said all legal formalities had been completed and that Sarabjit had already been sent back to India. The claim has not been independently verified.

Further adding to the uncertainty, Hindustan Times reported that Pakistani legal agencies have temporarily halted deportation due to multiple petitions pending before the Lahore High Court. According to the report, Sarabjit is currently in Lahore police custody and has been placed in a safe house. Photographs purportedly showing her at the facility have circulated on social media.

Sarabjit and her husband Nasir Hussain have approached the Lahore High Court, alleging police harassment. Separately, a counter-petition filed by former MLA Mahendra Pal Singh seeks her immediate deportation for violating visa conditions.

So far, Pakistani authorities have issued no official statement clarifying Sarabjit Kaur’s exact status or location, keeping her return to India uncertain.
