SC Orders Imran Khan's Immediate Release Amid Protests, Deaths

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered immediate release of the former prime minister of Pakistan on Thursday and termed his arrest unlawful on Thursday after Khan’s legal team challenged his arrest by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Over 2,500 people have been arrested after Khan’s arrest triggered massive and violent protests across Pakistan with ruling administration calling army for help.

At least 11 people were killed and dozens injured during protests in several cities.

Curfew was also imposed in Pakistan’s Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

 

Many military establishments were attacked and other government buildings were set ablaze by protestors.

Mobile data services and social media remained suspended.

As per media reports, schools and offices were also closed in two of Pakistan’s four provinces.

Khan was indicted on Wednesday for illegally selling state gifts during his tenure as the prime minister and put on an eight-day NAB remand.

Ruling governments Lawmaker, Mohsin Shahnawaz Ranjha was a litigant in the case against Khan on state gifts.

More than 100 police cases have been registered against Khan by the government since his removal from power in April 2022.

Meanwhile, rights groups including Amnesty condemned the internet suspension and urged government to show restraint during protests.
