Chandigarh/Amritsar, May 14 — Border Security Force (BSF) constable Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had ‘inadvertently crossed the International Border into Pakistan’ during operational duty on April 23, was repatriated on Tuesday morning at the Attari-Wagah border, according to a statement from the BSF Punjab Frontier’s Public Relations Officer.
“Today at 1030 hrs, Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw has been taken back from Pakistan by BSF at Attari-Wagah border,” the statement read.
“He had inadvertently crossed into Pakistani territory while on operational duty in the Ferozepur sector around 1150 hrs on April 23, 2025, and was detained by the Pakistan Rangers.”
The BSF confirmed that the return of the constable was made possible after “consistent efforts through regular flag meetings and other communication channels” with Pakistani counterparts.
Officials said that the personnel was unharmed and has been debriefed as per standard procedures.
India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) on May 10, after U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the U.S. intended to pursue trade relations with both countries, stating that India and Pakistan, being nuclear-armed, must sustain diplomatic engagement.
Tensions flared between the two rival neighbours after the Pahalgam attack. India said it carried out ‘precision strikes on nine targets across the border’ in retaliation. Pakistan responded by asserting that it had shot down multiple Indian jets, although Indian officials did not confirm any aircraft losses.
At least 15 civilians, including four children, were killed in Indian side of Kashmir and 42 others were injured due to the LOC shelling.
On the Pakistani side, officials reported 40 civilian deaths and 11 military personnel killed during the hostilities.
