Baramulla: National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah urged the Election Commission of India to act on the complaint submitted by his party against the detention of its workers and activists ahead of the Srinagar Lok Sabha elections held on May 13.

While speaking to reporters in Baramulla, Omar said that his party submitted written complaint to the ECI mentioning in detail the names of workers and activists detained by the police ahead of the polling in Srinagar and submitted the names of the police stations where the workers have been kept.

"ECI cannot remain silent on our complaint. It has to act against those who are involved and it has to act without any delay," Omar said.

He lamented the pervasive sense of "unease gripping Kashmir", stating that the concerted efforts to "subjugate its populace both economically and politically is concerning.

"We are facing a multitude of torments. Nothing is normal here. People are perturbed and petrified and there are elements who paint the wrong picture of this place claiming that everything here is hunky-dory. Nothing is normal here. In each and every aspect we have been pushed into the corner. We are number one in the entire country in unemployment, youth are getting involved in drugs. It is important to raise our voice and use the ballot. I just want one chance to represent you," Omar said in his address.

Responding to queries regarding the National Conference's prospects in the ongoing polls, Omar exuded confidence in his party's success across all three contested seats. Amidst speculation surrounding the impact of incarcerated candidate Er Rashid on the electoral dynamics in North Kashmir, omar refrained from commenting directly.
