Srinagar, Jan 8 — Authorities on Thursday closed the Daksum–Sinthan road for all vehicular traffic after ice formation made the stretch slippery and unsafe, officials said.

The decision was taken following reports of hazardous conditions on the mountainous road, which connects the Kashmir Valley with the Chenab region via Sinthan Top.

“The road has been closed in the interest of public safety as ice formation has made the carriageway extremely slippery,” an official said.

The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) said de-icing operations are underway to restore safe travel conditions. “Sprinkling of salt and urea is being carried out to clear ice from the road surface,” officials said.

Traffic will remain suspended until the stretch is declared safe for movement, they added.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the route and cooperate with authorities. Officials said further updates will be issued depending on weather and road conditions.
