CHAMOLI, UTTARAKHAND, 28 February – An avalanche struck a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) camp near Mana village, close to the Indo-Tibet border, in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Friday, trapping 57 workers engaged in road construction, officials said.
Sixteen workers have been rescued so far, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed, adding that efforts are underway to locate the remaining trapped workers.
Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said the avalanche buried the BRO camp between Mana and Badrinath. Mana, situated at an altitude of 3,200 meters, is the last village on the India-Tibet border.
Inspector General Nilesh Anand Bharne told ANI that 10 of the rescued workers were in critical condition and had been shifted to an army camp near Mana.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are conducting rescue operations despite heavy snowfall and rain.
