Srinagar, September 25: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday moved a resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly seeking the immediate restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory.
The resolution was moved after Question Hour and calls upon the Government of India to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
“In addition to the resolutions passed by this House on 26 June 2000 and 6 November 2024, the House calls upon the Government of India for full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and resolves that this Resolution be forwarded to the Government of India,” the resolution states.
The reference to the June 2000 resolution triggered protests from BJP members, who objected to its inclusion in the resolution and said they would not allow a discussion on autonomy in the House.
“We will not allow discussion on the issue of autonomy in the House,” BJP legislator Pathania said.
BJP legislators then entered the Well of the House and raised slogans, with some members climbing onto seats during the protest. Some BJP members also tore copies of the resolution into pieces.
The 2000 resolution was passed by the then National Conference-led government headed by Farooq Abdullah and sought restoration of greater autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir. The Assembly also passed a resolution on November 6, 2024, seeking restoration of the erstwhile special status.
The latest resolution links the earlier Assembly resolutions with the demand for restoration of statehood and directs that the resolution be forwarded to the Government of India.
The protests led to noisy scenes in the House, with members of the treasury benches and BJP legislators engaging in slogan-shouting.
