Poonch, Apr 11 — At least nine houses and a primary school developed cracks after land subsidence triggered by rainfall in a remote village of Poonch district, officials said on Saturday.
The incident was reported from Chikriban area of Mandi, where the ground began sinking following a landslide earlier this week.
“A landslide occurred on April 8, after which subsidence was reported in the area,” an official said, adding that a team was immediately rushed to assess the situation.
Officials said nine residential houses and one primary school were found vulnerable during the inspection. “As a precaution, the school has been shifted to a nearby private building to ensure student safety,” the official added.
Acting on directions of Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Sharma, a joint team of the district administration and police conducted an on-site assessment and initiated relief measures.
The administration has identified alternative accommodation for affected families, while a relief camp has been established under the supervision of the Naib Tehsildar Loran to provide immediate assistance.
“No loss of life has been reported so far,” the official said, adding that two government buildings have also been kept ready in case further evacuation is required.
Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored. “The district administration remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents,” the official added.
The area had witnessed a similar incident two years ago, following which at least three families were relocated.
