Srinagar, October 1: The Jammu and Kashmir Transport Department has directed its field offices to seize commercial vehicles that have completed 25 years and register FIRs if such vehicles are found operating on roads.

Transport Commissioner Vishesh Mahajan urged owners of vehicles that have reached the 25-year age limit to scrap them, citing concerns over the safety of commuters.

โ€œRequest all Commercial Vehicle owners to Scrap the vehicles which have attained the age of 25 years as today. We have written to field offices to seize and lodge FIRs in case they are found moving on the roads. We are concerned about Commuter Safety,โ€ Mahajan said.

The direction means commercial vehicles that have reached the specified age and continue to operate on public roads could face enforcement action, including seizure and criminal proceedings.

The Transport Department has accordingly asked its field offices to identify and act against such vehicles.

The Commissionerโ€™s appeal comes as the department steps up enforcement concerning the operation of ageing commercial vehicles, with safety of passengers and other road users cited as the primary concern.
